J30 Speech and Debate 1*
The Speech and Debate Elective for John I. Smith K-8 Center is a dynamic experience that allows students to improve their public speaking skills, writing skills and communication.  This course provides students with the skill set to build solid arguments and deliver their perspective in front of an audience. The course explores past and current topics that have an impact on society and affords the opportunity to learners to use their voice in order to demonstrate their perspective.

Students in the Speech and Debate elective will participate in several competitions throughout the academic school year.  Currently, there are three main competitions that students will be a part of if selected. The Big Question Debate, a nationally recognized grant program and debate competition.  The JIS speech & debate all year competition and the Theordore Gibson Oratorical Competition presented by Miami Dade College in collaboration with Dade County Public Schools. These wonderful opportunities will allow students to display their talents.  This unique course is an amazing experience for all middle school students.

The Speech & Debate elective is open to students in 7th and 8th grades only.
